Federal Labor climate policy significant step up from Coalition

The ALP’s policy platform on climate announced today is a significant step up from current Coalition Government approaches and brings us closer to our major allies and trading partners globally, according to Solutions for Climate Australia leader Dr Barry Traill.

‘It’s good to see a clear plan for reducing emissions this decade but more ambition than the 43 per cent target is needed if we are to avoid being left behind by other countries in the race to establish new renewably powered industries and jobs,’ said Dr. Barry Traill from Solutions for Climate Australia.

‘The Labor policy includes increasing reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from major polluters through the Safeguard Mechanism, and this is a good thing.  The Safeguard Mechanism was introduced by the Coalition Government several years ago, but has never been made effective.

‘Labor policy clearly recognises the opportunities for jobs that investing in renewable energy will bring to Australia and sets out a foundation for that. However, if we want a prosperous and healthy future, more ambition is needed. Other comparable countries - the US, the UK, Japan and in the European Union - all have stronger targets for reducing climate pollution.

“We’ve seen the business community call for more ambition, the international community criticise Australia as one of the worst laggards in the world, and poll after poll shows the Australian community is wanting to see the major parties get serious about tackling climate change.

‘Australia is rich in sunshine, wind and renewable technologies and has a skilled workforce so we are perfectly placed to cash-in as the world accelerates the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

‘Labor’s plan is notably silent on ending public subsidies for coal and gas, despite a transition away from fossil fuels being at the heart of climate solutions.

‘Strong policies are needed from federal decision makers to drive Australia’s uptake of renewable energy and storage, securing billions of dollars in investment and create hundreds of thousands of stable, long-term jobs for Aussies,’ finished Dr. Traill.
